What Happens When You Get in Touch

Most people who call us have never dealt with a workers’ compensation claim before, and the first conversation is usually about getting oriented rather than signing anything. Tell us when you were hurt, what kind of work you do, whether you reported the injury to your employer, and what the insurance company has said so far. From there we can usually tell you within a few minutes whether your claim looks straightforward, whether a deadline is close, and what the next step should be. There is no charge for that conversation and no obligation to hire us afterwards.

We answer messages sent through this page within one business day. If your call comes in after hours, leave a voicemail with a number we can reach you on and the best time of day to try. Our legal assistant speaks English and Spanish, so you can explain what happened in whichever language you are more comfortable with. If travel or an injury makes it hard to come to the office, we meet clients by phone and by video as readily as we do in person.

Questions We Are Asked Before the First Meeting

Two questions come up more than any others. The first is whether a lawyer is affordable, and the answer is that a consultation costs nothing and that fees in workers’ compensation cases are regulated in New Mexico rather than left to the firm to set. The second is whether hiring an attorney will annoy an employer or put a job at risk. Retaliating against a worker for pursuing a claim is unlawful, and in practice most employers hand the matter to their insurer and carry on as normal. If you have already been treated differently since reporting an injury, tell us during the first call, because that is a separate problem worth acting on quickly.

It is also worth saying what we do not do. We do not represent employers or insurance companies, we do not take a case we do not think we can help with, and we do not hand your file to someone you have never spoken to.
